Martin Verwijmeren, CEO of MP Objects, helps companies manage their logistics so that all their platforms, from the time an order is placed to its ultimate delivery, can be in sync.
The provider of cloud-based software for supply chain management does this “because companies want better options and lower costs,” Verwijmeren told FierceCEO.
There are many companies that sell supply chain software, but MP Objects can best fulfill orders through its “supply chain orchestration” software that gives companies better control over costs and customer service, Verwijmeren said. “This is done in real time so all parties involved have the latest information.”
A 'unified' system
The MP Objects multienterprise cloud platform for supply chain orchestration unifies information, processes and services across siloed enterprise resource planning, warehouse management and transportation management systems, Verwijmeren said.
The company helps brands, retailers and logistics service providers master inbound, outbound and reverse order flows, “and gives them visibility and the ability to collaborate and optimize across all of the internal and external parties in their supply chain,” he said.
MP Objects was founded in Rotterdam, Netherlands, in 2010 by childhood friends Verwijmeren and Paul Van Dongen. Today Van Dongen is CTO and MP Objects is headquartered in Boston and Rotterdam.
Verwijmeren said he has a “long track record” of leveraging technical innovations for improved supply chain execution performance. Prior to founding MP Objects, he led IT strategies at global logistics service providers CEVA and TNT Logistics.
Growth equity funding
In 2016, MP Objects raised $10 million in growth equity funding from Updata Partners to further develop product offerings, continue to grow its international customer base and to help establish a larger presence in the United States.
In 2017, Verwijmeren moved to the U.S. and established the company’s first office in this country.
He said he has since been focused on hiring and leading the sales and marketing team based in Boston and helping to secure the company’s first U.S.-based customers.
The company now has 4 office locations, in Rotterdam, Boston, Hyderabad and Tokyo, and about 60 employees.
Verwijmeren’s capabilities are powered, in part, by his Ph.D. in Distributed Computer Systems for Integral Inventory Management Across Networked Organizations from Eindhoven University of Technology.
And to relax, “I play the trombone,” he said.

When did you know you wanted to be a CEO?
When I left university. I knew that I wanted to eventually start my own company and be the CEO of it.
What is your favorite question to ask in a job interview?
I like to ask candidates what made them choose the majors that they did when they started undergraduate studies. It puts people back in time to their younger years and can reveal more about their views on life, expectations and dreams.
What's the single most important trait for a leader?
You need good measures of optimism and tenacity as a leader. There are always going to be organizational challenges, especially as a startup, and especially as you go about trying to articulate new concepts to the market. You can't get discouraged, you need to be able to rally yourself (and your team) after a bad day and continue the fight.
What keeps you up at night?
It's the bigger global themes that really do more than anything. Not to sound cliche, but it’s the welfare and well-being of people around the world, having a sustainable, global economy that works for everyone, not just a small percent.
What is the key to finding new revenue opportunities?
It's important to be customer-centric. I believe that having a customer-first approach to how we develop our platform and go to market has been key to our success so far.
